Volunteer VIP - Susan Bardolph

Read how this month’s Volunteer VIP, Susan Bardolph, achieves her life goals and helps others …

Setting life goals and helping others is what this month’s Volunteer VIP is all about.

“My mom was a patient of The Lacks Cancer Center several years ago, and she really encouraged me to volunteer and give back to the community that helped her when she needed it most.”

And help she does! Only when Susan Bardolph is facing something as grim as exam week does she miss her scheduled volunteering shift in the Radiation Oncology department at Saint Mary’s Health Care. She even volunteered during the weeks of Christmas and New Year’s, filing papers and preparing charts for patients. She began her volunteership in July 2008 in the Medical Oncology department before making the transition several months later to the level below, Radiation Oncology.

Bardolph likes the people she volunteers with, as they make it “so enjoyable.” As a biology major at Calvin College, Bardolph plans on attending medical school, so she gains much from the hospital setting.

Not busy enough as a full-time student, Bardolph also holds a part-time job doing research. Originally, she had thought of herself doing research as a profession, but as she got more involved in research, the more she turned to a hospital setting for her career path. Her decision is reinforced weekly as she quietly sits each Wednesday in Radiation Oncology among the Saint Mary’s associates and physicians, organizing charts for our patients.

“I’m seriously considering going into the field of Radiation Oncology; I’ve just enjoyed my experience within this department so much,” said Bardolph.

Her advice to students: “I definitely encourage anyone who’s seriously interested in the medical field to take up volunteering. It’s nerve wracking at first, because it’s something new, but volunteering is a really good experience to get involved and give back.”
