The Lacks Cancer Center at Saint Mary’s TomoTherapy
Fact Sheet
- The Lacks Cancer Center at Saint Mary’s is the first
healthcare network in Michigan to have TomoTherapy®
– the latest in cancer-fighting technology.
- TomoTherapy® is an integrated CAT-scanner and radiation
treatment unit that allows high energy radiation therapy
with extremely accurate patient positioning.
- Typically, a patient is scanned to determine the treatment
area and then sent to another site for treatment; with
TomoTherapy®, the patient is scanned and treated without
going anywhere.
- With TomoTherapy®, a radiation oncologist can sculpt
small, powerful and precise radiation beams to hit hard-to-reach
tumors. The machine’s built-in scanning can confirm
the shape and position of the tumor seconds before treatment
begins, and account for any patient movement.
- Another benefit of TomoTherapy is that radiation exposure
to healthy tissue is reduced dramatically.
- This technology, formally called the TomoTherapy Hi-Art
System®, was developed by a Madison, Wisconsin-based
privately held company called TomoTherapy Inc.
- TomoTherapy Inc. selected The Lacks Cancer Center as
one of its 20 Centers of Excellence.
- As a Center of Excellence, The Lacks Cancer Center will
participate in measuring patient outcomes and be assigned
an on-site technical advisor for a minimum one-year period.
