Classes to Help You Prepare
Whether you’re a first timer or an experienced parent
, Saint Mary’s offers a variety of pregnancy, childbirth
and parenting classes to prepare you for the arrival of your
new baby.
Classes offered include:
Birthing Center Tour
Childbirth Education
Childbirth Preparation
Sibling Preparation
Breast Feeding
Infant and Child CPR
Infant Massage (by appointment)
Baby on Board exercise class
There’s no better time than now to prepare for your
new arrival.
If you’re interested in signing up for a class call
the Centralized Scheduling office at 616-685-4000 between
6:30 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Monday – Thursday and 7:30
a.m. – 6 p.m. on Friday. If you have questions please

classes except Baby on Board are held at Saint Mary’s
in the Wege Conference and Education Center at 300 Lafayette.
Convenient, free, covered, lighted parking is located in
the Wege Center parking lot. Classes are located on the first
floor (take the north (right side) elevator down to one).
For the Tuesday evening 6pm tours, please meet on the 9th
floor of the main hospital, in the Birthing Center.
Birthing Center Tour
We welcome you to take a tour of our beautiful Birthing
Center. Come meet our staff, learn about our programs and
services, visit the nursery, tour a private birthing room,
and learn about our neonatal unit.
When: Tours are offered every Tuesday at 6:00 pm.
Where: Please meet on the 9th floor of the main hospital
Please Note: All Preparation for Childbirth, Comprehensive
Childbirth, and Refresher Classes include a tour during class
times.

Comprehensive Childbirth Education
This 5 week series offers an all-inclusive childbirth program,
incorporating information on the last trimester, signs of
labor and when to call your physician or midwife, labor and
delivery, comfort measures and positions, breathing &
relaxation techniques, and new parent information. Class designed
for first time parents. This class includes a tour of our
Birthing Center.

Preparation for Childbirth
This series includes information on the last trimester,
signs of labor and when to call your physician or midwife,
labor and delivery, comfort measures and positions, breathing
& relaxation techniques. This class includes a tour of
our Birthing Center.

Sibling Preparation
This class introduces the three to nine year old to the changes
that will occur with the addition of a new baby to the family.
A parent is also required to attend. Please have each child
bring a doll or stuffed animal to practice diapering and holding
baby.
A tour of the birthing center is included in the class.

Basic Breastfeeding
Instructor will guide parents-to-be on why breastfeed,
advantages of breastfeeding, positioning of mom and baby,
and how to tell your baby is getting enough to eat. Please
bring a doll to practice correct positioning of baby. Class
offers suggestions on the pumping and storage of breast milk,
choosing equipment, and practical advice on retuning to the
workplace.

Infant/Child CPR
This course is for parents and grandparents. Course includes
discussion and demonstration of infant & child CPR, management
of the choking infant & child, rescue breathing, and hands
on practice. We follow the American Heart “pediatric
chain of survival”, including injury prevention tips.
This is not a certification class.

Infant Massage
Infant Massage Training for Parents or Caregivers (3 sessions)
This three-part course is offered to parents or caregivers with infants ages 6 weeks to 6 months. Reinforces the benefits of infant massage while learning baby's cues, comfort measures, and techniques that promote bonding and attachment. Include complete instruction and guided practice, instruction manual.
Infant Massage Training (1 hour private session) Covers all the strokes and benefits for infant massage including a handout. Please call Mind, Body, Spirit at 616-685-6923
Baby on Board
This class is offered to expectant and postpartum mothers.
A total fitness experience appropriate for all trimesters
of pregnancy and for all fitness levels. A physician’s
written approval is required for all non-members to attend
this program.

Severe Weather
Call the hospital operator at 616-685-5000 to check if a class
is canceled due to weather. Most of the time classes will
not be canceled, however if you feel it is not safe to drive
from your area, or are unable to for any reason, please stay
home.
What to Bring to Class
Please bring pillows for comfort, wear layered clothing
(sweater) as class rooms may get too hot or cold, you may
also want to bring change for snacks, a water bottle and
a pen. Bring a doll or stuffed animal to the Basic Breastfeeding
class, the 5th week of the Comprehensive class, a doll or
stuffed animal for each child in the sibling class. If you
