Saint Mary’s Stroke Program

Today, stroke is the nation’s third-leading cause of death, trailing only cardiac diseases and cancer. To tackle this formidable foe we offer a full-range of services and have designed treatment protocols that emphasize speed, efficiency and the latest medical and technological innovations. From rapid response to evaluation, therapy and rehabilitation, we use a streamlined approach to ensure your optimal care.

Saint Mary’s is one of only a handful of hospitals in Michigan invited to participate in an ongoing Michigan State University study of stroke treatment, known as the MASCOT study. Participation in the MASCOT research project is evidence of our growth as an innovative regional center for stroke care services.

Our complete approach to stroke care includes:

  • A full-service Stroke Center
  • Treatment protocols from emergency department arrival to hospital discharge
  • Expedited imaging studies and lab work for patients with stroke symptoms
  • A multidisciplinary stroke response team
  • Educational programs for emergency department nurses and neuroscience nurses about stroke clinical pathways
  • Early rehabilitation assessment and therapy
  • Dedicated stroke beds on the neuroscience unit
  • Partnerships with key agencies, including the Kent County Stroke Coalition and the American Stroke Association

Complementary therapies help mind and body

In conjunction with The Wege Institute at Saint Mary’s, the Stroke Program actively integrates complementary therapies into patients’ overall treatment program. These therapies provide a new dimension of care for patients recovering from stroke, with healing benefits for mind, spirit and body.

Beneficial complementary therapies include:

  • acupuncture
  • manual therapy
  • massage therapy
  • music therapy
  • neurofeedback
